On December 30th, 2025, we lost a beloved friend of Camp Mardela - Jerry Garey. So much of his life was in this place. He met his wife here when they were 8 years old, he faithfully helped with the Thursday volunteer crew until he was unable to, he served in various leadership roles at camp and in the community during his full and joyful life.
I was able to attend his memorial service and Ridgely Church of the Brethren was filled to the brim with people who had
been impacted by Jerry’s life. It was amazing to hear all the amazing things he had done, as I had only known him in the past 5 years. Even in that short time I have accumulated my own fond memories of him - helping paint my house when I moved in, showing me pictures in the King hallways of him and his siblings at camp in the same shirt, how he always helped clean up after meals on Thursdays, and many more.
Many people made generous donations to Camp Mardela in his honor, and shared kind words and fond memories of Jerry. Here are a few of them:
“(Jerry Garey was) an amazing person as well as uncle. Many fond memories of summer camp and activities.”
“He was a volunteer at Camp Mardela his entire life, and a dedicated servant to Christ & many others as well, especially the Ridgely Church of the Brethren. He will be missed.”
“(He) was a wonderful community leader and friend to so many people.”
“I attended camp here as a child with many of my other Garey cousins. It was a wonderful experience. I knew the camp was dear to my Uncle Garey”

There of course is far more that can be said about Jerry, and I am sure many who are reading this have their own fond memories of him. Hold those stories dear, and his spirit will live on. We will keep his spirit of faith and service alive here at camp, as we remember his life of service and hear unique laugh echoing through the woods of Camp Mardela.
